Inside Bets Roulette Strategy
Inside bets are placed directly on the numbered grid. They cover from 1 to 6 numbers and pay between 5:1 and 35:1. The variance is dramatic.
Inside-bet strategies look very different from outside-bet strategies on the bankroll graph - long flat losing sections punctuated by sharp wins.
What counts as an inside bet
- Straight up - 1 number, 35:1, 2.70% hit on European.
- Split - 2 adjacent numbers, 17:1, 5.41% hit.
- Street - 3 numbers in a row, 11:1, 8.11% hit.
- Corner - 4 numbers meeting at a corner, 8:1, 10.81% hit.
- Six line - 6 numbers (two adjacent streets), 5:1, 16.22% hit.
Variance is the headline
A $10 single-number bet on European has SD per spin of about $58 - five times the SD of a red/black bet of the same size. Across 100 spins, total SD is ~$580.
That is why inside-bet bankroll graphs look like long flat lines with sudden jumps. The expected loss is the same 2.70% of total wagered, but you may have to wait dozens of spins to see a single win on a straight-up bet.
Inside-bet strategies
Flat single number is the simplest. Flat $10 on 17 for 100 spins on European: expected ~2.7 wins, each paying $350. Average net: ~−$27. Distribution: very wide - sessions of 0 wins lose −$1,000; sessions with 5+ wins net huge positive.
Flat six line is the gentler inside bet - 16.22% hit rate, 5:1 payout. Bankroll graph is smoother.
Combination inside bets (multiple straights on lucky numbers) are common but mathematically equivalent to a single bet covering all those numbers.
Hit frequency reality
Across 100 spins on European, the expected number of hits on a single number is 100/37 = 2.7. Variance is high: it is not unusual to see 0 hits or 6 hits in 100 spins.
Probability of zero hits in 100 spins: (36/37)100 = 6.4%. So roughly one in 16 sessions of 100 spins on a single number sees no win at all.
When inside bets make sense
When variance is the point. If you want big swings and the possibility of dramatic wins, inside bets deliver. The expected value is the same negative number as any other bet, but the path to it is more interesting.
When chasing a specific event (a friend's birthday number, a sequence experiment), inside bets are the right tool.
When you want a session that takes forever to resolve in either direction, do not use inside bets - the swings will be sharp.
