Roulette Win Rate
Win rate is the fraction of spins that won. A 60% win rate sounds great. It is also completely consistent with losing money long-term.
This page explains the gap between win rate and profitability - one of the most common misunderstandings in roulette strategy.
Win rate by bet type
| Bet | European win rate | Payout |
|---|---|---|
| Red / Black / Odd / Even / Low / High | 48.65% | 1:1 |
| Dozen / Column | 32.43% | 2:1 |
| Six line | 16.22% | 5:1 |
| Corner | 10.81% | 8:1 |
| Street | 8.11% | 11:1 |
| Split | 5.41% | 17:1 |
| Single number | 2.70% | 35:1 |
Why high win rate can still lose
A bet covering more numbers wins more often but pays less per win. The expected value (win frequency × payout − loss frequency × stake) lands at the same percentage for every standard bet.
Example: James Bond covers 25 of 37 numbers - win rate 67.57%. Yet over many spins it loses exactly 2.70% of every dollar wagered, the same as flat betting on red.
Win rate vs net result
For a 1:1 bet, breakeven win rate is 50%. European red wins 48.65%. The 1.35% gap is the house edge.
For a 35:1 bet, breakeven win rate is 1/36 = 2.78%. European straight-up wins 2.70%. The 0.08-point gap is the same 2.70% house edge expressed as percentage of stake.
Win rate by strategy (not changed by progression)
Win rate is a property of the bet, not the strategy. Martingale on red has the same 48.65% win rate as flat red. The strategy changes how stakes are distributed across winning and losing spins, not the wins themselves.
So a strategy never improves win rate. Coverage strategies can increase win rate by covering more numbers, but only at the cost of smaller payouts.
The misleading marketing of win rate
Roulette systems often advertise '80% win rate', '90% win rate' or higher. Almost always these claims are:
- Measured on cycle completion rather than per-spin (e.g. Paroli '92% of cycles complete' - not true; only 11.5% complete a full 3-win cycle).
- Measured on per-cycle basis where 'win' is defined as net positive cycle (Labouchere style).
- Counted on a single short session where variance happened to be kind.
- Outright fabricated.
A real, honest win rate for a strategy is the per-spin hit fraction of all its bets, weighted by stake. It is always 48.65% for even-money on European - or whatever the underlying bet's probability is.
Win rate that actually matters
The only win rate worth measuring is across enough spins to be statistically meaningful (1,000+). At that sample size, win rate matches the underlying bet probability, which means it tells you no more than picking the bet type does.
Real measurement of a strategy is variance, drawdown and bust rate - not win rate.
