Labouchere Roulette Strategy
Labouchere - sometimes called Cancellation or Split Martingale - is one of the most distinctive roulette systems because it defines a profit target before you start. Choose a sequence whose sum equals your target, bet the first plus last numbers, cross them off on a win, append the lost amount on a loss.
It is more disciplined than Martingale but the bankroll demands are similar. Long losing streaks make the sequence grow faster than wins can clear it.
How Labouchere works
- Pick a sequence summing to your profit target. Standard starter: 1, 2, 3, 4 - target +10 units.
- Bet first + last (here: 1+4 = 5 units).
- Win: cross off first and last (sequence becomes 2, 3). Bet 2+3 = 5 units next.
- Lose: append the lost bet amount to the end (sequence becomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5). Bet 1+5 = 6 units next.
- If only one number remains, bet that number. Win clears the sequence.
- When the sequence is empty, you have hit your profit target. Start a new sequence or stop.
Example session
| Sequence | Bet (units) | Result | New sequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,2,3,4 | 5 (1+4) | Win | 2,3 |
| 2,3 | 5 (2+3) | Loss | 2,3,5 |
| 2,3,5 | 7 (2+5) | Win | 3 |
| 3 | 3 | Win | (empty - target hit) |
Net result: +5 − 5 + 7 − 7 + ... actually +10 once the sequence clears. Whatever path the wins and losses took, clearing the sequence locks in the original target.
Bankroll requirements
The danger of Labouchere is sequence growth during losing streaks. Every loss adds one number to the sequence. Every win removes two. A run of losses can blow up the sequence faster than wins can clear it.
Worst case: starting from 1,2,3,4 and hitting 8 consecutive losses, the sequence becomes 12 numbers long with a sum approaching 70 units. The next bet is the sum of the largest and smallest, which by then can be 15+ units on a $10 base = $150.
Cycle completion math
A short Labouchere cycle (1,2,3,4 target +10) completes whenever wins outnumber losses by exactly the sequence length divided by two. Across many spins on European red, completion rate is around 60% per cycle for the standard 1,2,3,4 starter.
The remaining 40% of cycles end in either a partial recovery or a bust. The expected long-run return matches the house edge.
Aggressive vs conservative sequences
- Conservative: 1,1,1,1,1 - target +5 units. Small sequence growth, low risk.
- Standard: 1,2,3,4 - target +10 units. Common starter.
- Aggressive: 5,5,5,5 - target +20 units. Bigger bets, faster sequence growth.
- Single-cycle goal: a one-number sequence like [10] - target +10 in a single win.
Test results
Across 200 spins of $10 Labouchere on $1,000 bankroll on European:
- ~60% complete the original cycle within the session.
- ~30% complete one cycle but get stuck mid-way through a second.
- ~10% bust during a long losing streak (sequence grows past affordable).
- Expected loss matches the house edge times total wagered.
Where Labouchere fits
Labouchere is the system for players who want a defined session goal: 'win 10 units and stop'. It enforces discipline. It also enforces bankroll exposure - the sequence is unforgiving when losses outpace wins.
Recommended pairing: Oscar's Grind for the same +1 unit cycle idea with much lower bankroll demands.
