Roulette Losing Streaks

Long losing streaks are not bad luck. They are statistically expected over enough spins. They are also the single biggest threat to progression systems.

This page lists the expected streak lengths and explains why a 12-loss streak is not rare.

Streak probability formula

For a bet with loss probability q, the probability of n consecutive losses anywhere is qn. The probability of seeing some streak of length n in N spins is approximately 1 − (1 − qn)N.

On European red (q = 0.5135):

In n spins, the expected longest losing streak is approximately log(n) / log(1/q). For European red:

Why progressions die at long streaks

Martingale needs base × (2n+1 − 1) bankroll to absorb n losses. A 10-loss streak on $10 base requires $10,230. A 12-loss streak requires $40,950.

Expected longest streak in 1,000 spins is 14. The Martingale bankroll for that is $163,830.

Most real bankrolls cannot handle even 10 losses. So in a 1,000-spin session, Martingale almost certainly busts.

What players underestimate

Players regularly think 'a 10-loss streak in a row is so rare it won't happen to me'. It happens to most people. It happened to someone yesterday and will happen to someone tomorrow.

The right question is not whether a long streak can happen, but how your strategy handles one when it does.

Streak-proofing rule: design your strategy assuming a 12-loss streak will arrive. If the bankroll cannot survive that, the system is on borrowed time.
