American Roulette Strategy
American roulette is the most common wheel in US casinos and the worst standard variant for the player. The extra 00 pocket pushes the house edge from 2.70% (European) to 5.26%.
Every strategy still works the same way mechanically, but on American it loses money roughly twice as fast. Test accordingly.
The double zero
The American wheel has 38 pockets: 1-36 plus single zero (0) and double zero (00). The extra pocket is what makes the edge.
Red wins 18/38 spins = 47.37%, not 48.65% as on European. Across thousands of spins that 1.28 percentage-point gap turns into a serious money difference.
Why the edge nearly doubles
The math: a $10 bet on red. You win $10 with probability 18/38. You lose $10 with probability 20/38 (18 black + 0 + 00).
Expected value per spin = −$0.53. That is 5.26% of the stake - almost twice the European 2.70%.

Do progression systems work better on American?
No. They work worse. Martingale needs the win probability on the even-money bet to be near 50%. On American it is 47.37%, which means longer expected losing streaks and worse bust frequency.
Same logic for Fibonacci, D'Alembert and Labouchere. The wheel is the cause, not the cure.
Why test on American at all
Two reasons. First, if you actually play in a US casino, you need to know how strategies behave on the wheel in front of you. Second, American results give you the worst-case picture - if a strategy survives 1,000 spins on American, it will probably survive on European too.
Use the tester with American selected for stress tests. Use European for normal benchmarking.
Best practical advice for American players
- Play fewer spins. Total wagered is the multiplier on expected loss.
- Stick to outside bets if you are budget-constrained - the variance is lowest there.
- Avoid the five-number bet (0, 00, 1, 2, 3). It has a 7.89% edge - higher than the wheel average.
- If a European table is available at the same minimum, switch.
